Tell us about yourself and what inspired you to start writing.
I’m Dr. Stuart Knott, a PhD graduate from the United Kingdom. I’m 25, a lifelong fan of horror, comic books, and videogames, and currently live in Bedfordshire.
I’ve always enjoyed writing; even as a kid I used to write little stories, often with illustrations, of me and my friends going on wacky adventures. It’s always been a hobby of mine but I really started taking it more seriously when I turned sixteen and, later, at university.
Describe your writing process? Is there anything unique about it?
I think so. Generally, I start with the germ of an idea and then develop it into an outline and a series of character breakdowns before plotting out each chapter and the vague idea of where the story will go before letting the writing guide me. I like to emphasis realistic dialogue and a decent amount of descriptions, as well as keeping things as logical and grounded as possible.
Have you published any books or do you have a desire to do so?
‘Nightshade: The Inception’ is something of a coming-of-age story about a troubled teenager who suffers a life-changing break up that turns his world upside down. Lashing out and withdrawing into himself, he ends up adopting a vigilante persona in a town on the brink of anarchy and ends up embroiled in a gang war.
‘The Teamos Connection’ is a collection of six short stories, mostly revolving around horrific events perpetrated by a malevolent supermarket that is actually a front for biological research.
Do you have any favorite poets or authors?
Definitely Stephen King. “It” is still my favourite novel ever written and I took a lot of inspiration from many of his works and the way he can take normal, everyday situations and characters and introduce an extraordinary or horrific element into them. I am also a big fan of dark humour, like Bret Easton Ellis’ “American Psycho”, and science-fiction stories by the likes of H. G. Wells or even Douglas Adams.
Do you have a favorite book of poetry or poems?
I do enjoy reading. Mostly, I read graphic novels (I love my Batman and Spider-Man) but I do read full-length novels as well. As I said, “It” is my all-time favourite book but I also enjoy “The Stand”, “The Tommyknockers”, and “Dreamcatcher”. Outside of King, “American Psycho”, “The Rules of Attraction” are top books for me and I also enjoy the “Red Dwarf” books by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor.
What are you reading now?
I just started reading Stephen King’s “Insomnia” again, which another of my favourites of his.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Full-time job, pets, hobbies?
I do have a full-time job (though I’ve mainly been on furlough lately). Most of my free time is spent gaming or writing reviews and articles for my website, as well as watching movies.
Are you working on a current project?
I’m currently nearing the end of the first rough draft of a shorter novella about some young kids who uncover an ancient secret in their quiet little home town.
