Tell us about yourself and what inspired you to start writing.
My mother passed away when I was 10 years old. She was only 33 years old at the time. It was at this point that I realized certain feelings within myself and the need to express them. Throughout my life, writing has been my outlet and means of coping with the adversity I faced.
Describe your writing process? Is there anything unique about it?
My writing process is generally grounded in my headspace or feeling at the time that I put pen to paper. There is always a purpose or story behind every poem I write. In this way, my poems essentially write themselves.
Have you published any books or do you have a desire to do so?
My work is a reflection of who I am as a person and my experiences. I find myself entangling everything from my humble upbringing, the death of my mother at an early age, my work as an educator, psychological state and constant gripes with society.
Do you have any favorite poets or authors?
James Baldwin and Gil Scott-Heron
Do you have a favorite book of poetry or poems?
I enjoy reading about social issues from different perspectives. Two of my favorite books are “The Fire Next Time” by James Baldwin and “Between the World and Me” by Ta’Nehisi Coates.
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading “Go Tell It On the Mountain” by James Baldwin.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Full-time job, pets, hobbies?
I am an educator. I currently serve as the Math Instructional Coach at an elementary school in Washington, DC. In my spare time, when I am not writing, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two dogs or listening to my collection of Vinyl records.
Are you working on a current project?I am currently considering a children’s story written in prose.
